Have you walked through Omotesando today?
Did many people come and go?
Show windows of various brands are lined up, coloring the city.
In this work of a splendid show window,
What, do you think, are you staring at?—What is there?
I compressed their dress,
Show windows and Omotesando into a single surface
And created portraits that proved their presence.

I express the way things ought to be and the relationship among those things in my work.
The natural mineral pigments in the raw mediums of Japanese painting are broken particles.
You see all the relationships in the world on the surface where these particles gather.

Using an aqueous woodcut technique, I create prints of bathrooms.
This technique, which uses water as a medium, evokes a scene of dancing waters, a bathroom filled with steam, and a damp texture.

Born in Tokyo. Grew up in Omotesando and Shinjuku. Photographer and glass artist. In recent years I have won competitions in which National Gallery curators serve as chairs of judging and participated in many overseas exhibitions. I am broadening my work to include areas of expression to include installations. I am intrigued by phrases that, from ancient times in Japan, use the character for “road” (道) like “flower arrangement,” “tea ceremony” and “martial arts,” evoking the spirit of Zen, and invisible things…I wish to make work that depicts time and history, the beauty and strength of life, pain and transience.
In this exhibition, I plan to replace some works from the first half with those in the second half.

In their 3D art, Kaeru Tsukino cuts out printouts of digital illustrations and layers them while coating them with resin like candy. Please enjoy this 3D that merges the nostalgic with the new.
My father was a science teacher and artist, and my mother was a social worker and Japanese dancer.
Graduated from Otsuma Women’s University Faculty of Language and Literature, Department of Japanese Language and Literature.
I abandoned the career paths of Japanese language teacher and koto player to raise two sons.
When I was raising my children in 2003, I was introduced to the needle-felt method and was drawn to the texture of wool, the simplicity of the method, the excitement and emotion of felt-making. Thereafter I started to teach myself the method and work to create my wool and felt pieces.
By combining my interest in architecture with a knowledge of pastries and ability to portray the picturesque, I made an original genre of wool sweets.
I specialize in creating artworks both realistic and cute and have published six books from 2012 to the present.
Always flexible and daring, never hesitating to directly express what I like.
Besides training for the future and searching for new fields of expression, I presented works in Paris, the city of art.
Biography
2003. Introduced to needle-felt method. Then, after being given just one needle, I started teaching myself the craft.
2004. Started to present my works online and sell them independently to interested buyers. Started to reply to inquiries from those wanting to make their own works.
2005. When my children were enrolled in kindergarten, I was directly struck by this voice telling me what I wanted to become, and I became president of the “anemone wool sweets” classroom.
2006. Featured in the handicraft magazines Country Craft, Craft Café (Nihon Vogue Co., Ltd.) and Suteki na Country (Gakken Holdings)
2007. Published Wool-Felt Sweets (Nihon Vogue Co., Ltd.) and Home Sweet Craft (Nihon Vogue Co., Ltd.) by Rio Fukuda. Solo exhibition at Arrivee et Depart Aoyama.
2008. Published Rio Fukuda’s Wool-Felt Sweets Recipes (Nihon Vogue Co., Ltd.). Appeared on the NHK educational TV program Oshare Kobo. Appeared on the TBS program Shittoko!
